13 mutineers in Dinajpur jailed

Verdict in case against 105 today in Satkhira

Thirteen jawans of Dinajpur Sector of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were yesterday sentenced to jail terms ranging from four months to four years for their involvement in the mutiny at the sector headquarters on February 26 in 2009. The Special Court-13 headed by Dinajpur Sector Commander Col Md Saleh Ahmad also fined the convicts Tk 100 each. The convicts are Md Abdul Motaleb, Md Mamunar Rashid, Md Monirul Islam, Humayun Kabir, Md Asadul Islam, Nipun Kanti Bagchi, Md Shahidul Islam, Rubel Rana, Shamser Alam, Abdul Wahab, Mahbub Alam, Md Aminul Islam and Islam Uddin, reports our correspondent. All the mutineers were produced in the court. Eleven of them were brought to the court from Dinajpur jail by a prison van while the rest two in an ambulance as they were sick. Motaleb was jailed for four months, Rashid for one year, Monirul for one and a half years, Humayun and Asadul were jailed for two years, Nipun, Shahidul and Rana for three years, and Shamser, Wahab, Mahbub, Aminul and Islam for four years. The trial of the mutiny case started on November 27, 2010. Junior Commanding Officer (JCO) Enamul Haque of Dinajpur BGB Sector brought mutiny charges against the 13 jawans of the sector. During hearing of the case, all the 13 confessed to their involvement in the mutiny and begged for mercy. Two other members of the court were Lt Col Md Mahfuz Alam and Major Muhammad Masud Ul Islam. Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Roy was present. Our Satkhira correspondent reported that the special court -1 will deliver judgement in the mutiny case against 105 members 41 Battalion today. After completion of arguments on February 9, the court, headed by Rajshahi BGB Sector Commander Lt Col Yahiya Azam Khan, fixed the date for pronouncement of the verdict. Two other members are Lt Col. Khalid Hossain and Major Touhidul Islam. As many as 47 prosecution witnesses gave their statements before the court. According to our Khagrachhari correspondent, on completion of arguments between the mutineers of 11Batalian under BGB Khagrachhari Sector and the prosecution witnesses, the special court-15 yesterday adjourned the trial proceedings until 9:30am today The three-member court, headed by Khagrachhari BGB Sector Commander Lt Col Abu Wahab Mohammad Hafizul Haque, asked the authorities concerned to produce all the 69 accused in the court.
