Housewives, schoolgirl commit 'suicide'

Three housewives and a schoolgirl 'committed suicide' in Kushtia on Friday and Saturday. Zonaki Khatun, 18, wife of Saiful Islam of Gobindagunia village in Mirpur upazila 'committed suicide' Friday afternoon. Saiful married Zonaki, daughter of Lutfar Rahman of Sultanpur in the upazila, a year ago, keeping secret his first marriage. Zonaki came to know the matter after marriage and had often picked up quarrel with her husband, her family sources said, adding that following an altercation over the issue on Friday, Saifur tortured her to death. Saiful family denied the allegation, saying that Zonaki committed suicide. Mirpur police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy. Police said they will take necessary steps after getting autopsy report. Shapla Khatun, 16, wife of Akram Hossain in Bottail area of Kushtia town committed suicide following torture by her husband for dowry on Saturday. Akram married Shapla, daughter of Mofiz Uddin of Roydanga village in Kumarkhali upazila, four months ago. Police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy. Fulza, 25, wife of Ziarul, took poison at her husband's house at Elangipara village in Kumarkhali upazila on Thursday and died at Khoksa Upazila Health Complex on Saturday. Police said Ziarul married Fulza, daughter of Mofiz Uddin of Kamlapur village in Khoksa upazila, four years ago. Family members said Fulza took poison after husband misbehaved with her Thursday afternoon. Her body was sent to Kushtia General Hospital for autopsy. Schoolgirl Sabina Khatun, 14, daughter of Altaf Hossain of Ambaria village in Khoksa upazila, committed suicide by hanging herself from a beam in a room of their house Saturday noon. Family sources said mother scolded Sabina, a class VII student of Abbaria High School, as she went on a picnic with her friends on Friday. Khoksa police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital for autopsy.
