After long 58 years of Language Movement, the foundation stone of the district Central Shaheed Minar was finally laid on Thakurgaon Government Boys' High School ground yesterday. Water Resource Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, who attended as chief guest, laid the foundation. The programme followed a discussion where Language Movement veteran former lawmaker Fazlul Karim attended as special guest while it was presided by deputy commissioner of Thakurgaon Muhammad Shahiduzzaman. The speakers thanked the deputy commissioner for his sincere and successful move to build the Central Shaheed Minar. In last few decades, several initiatives to build a monument to pay tribute to the language heroes and martyrs went in vain, they said. Later a cultural function was held at the venue with the artistes of Eco Social Development Organisation (ESDO). In Narail, One lakh candles were lit in memory of Language Movement martyrs on the playground of Narail Government Victoria College yesterday, reports our correspondent. Ekushey Udjapan Parishad organised the programme. Language Movement veteran Rizia Khatun, Liakat Ali Lucky, general secretary of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, Begum Fazilatunessa, wife of Bir Shrestho Nur Mohammad jointly inaugurated the ceremony. A discussion and cultural programme were also held.
