Casual jute workers' 48-hour ultimatum

Staff Correspondent, Khulna
The casual workers of seven state-owned jute mills in Khulna and Jessore industrial belts have threatened to launch an agitation programme if their jobs are not regularised by tomorrow. Casual Workers Coordination Committee (CWCC) gave a 48-hour ultimatum at a protest rally at Khalishpur yesterday evening. Chaired by Md Noor Islam, convenor of the committee, the rally was addressed by labour leaders Manik Parvez, Rashedul Islam, Md. Isa Gazi, Abdur Razzak, Shafiqul Islam, Delwar Hossain, Abu Saleh and Jhanu Mian. The speakers alleged that the authorities concerned of the seven state-owned jute mills have been delaying in making services of 1200 casual workers permanent despite a circular issued in this regard from BJMC head office on January 13 this year. They said services of all casual workers of jute mills in Dhaka and Chittagong industrial belts have already been made permanent in response to BJMC circular while fate of those working as casual workers in the Khulna and Jessore industrial belts is still hanging in balance. “We have no other alternative but to go for agitation to realise our demand,” Noor Islam said, adding that they will launch a tougher agitation programme if the demand is not met by tomorrow. Meanwhile, state owned Eastern Jute Mill, which was on the verge of closure due to heavy loss, made a profit of Tk 53 lakh in the last four months, reports UNB. The production capacity of the jute mill now stands at 23.5 tonnes per day against the target of 21.88 tonnes. Sources said the jute mill was established on 43.25 acres of land at Atra industrial area in Fultola upazila of Khulna district in 1967.
