Death of schoolgirl triggers protest

Death of a schoolgirl yesterday triggered protest by students and locals in Sujanagar upazila. The girl died after a speedy microbus hit her at Poradanga village. Agitated students put up barricade on Pabna-Sujanagar highway disrupting traffic movement for about one hour. Victim Monzila Khatun,14, was daughter of Chenu Uddin of village Berdulia in Sujanagar upazila. She was a student of class eight in Poradanga Haji Ezem Uddin High School. Police and locals said, a speedy microbus hit her at Poradanga at about 10:00am yesterday when she was going to school. She died on the spot. Students of different schools and locals rushed to the spot and put up a barricade on Pabna-Sujanagar road. They also brought out a huge procession and held a protest rally on the highway demanding punishment of the culprits. They also ransacked a few vehicles. Later police arrested the driver and seized the microbus. On Saturday noon, a speedy truck killed a pedestrian in Uttarchalk area of Pabna-Chatmohar Road in Atghoria upazila triggering protest by locals. Police seized the truck and arrested the driver from the spot. Victim Uttam Kumar Deb, 45, was son of Sanjit Kumar Deb of village Uttar Chalk of the upazila. Officer-in-charge of Atghoria police station Kazi Haniful Islam said a Pabna-bound truck hit Uttam when he was crossing the road killing him on the spot. Locals put up a barricade on the road disrupting road communication for over an hour. They dispersed after police arrested the driver and seized the truck.
