Mob set fire to houses of 2 Khulna 'robbers'
An angry mob at Bastuhara Colony in Khalishpur of Khulna city on Saturday evening set fire to the houses and shops of two alleged members of the gang who committed robbery at a Grameenphone dealer's office on Shaltala Road in Bagerhat town on Thursday night.
Over a hundred residents of Bastuhara colony attacked the houses of the two alleged robbers Belal Hossain Bilu and Zahid Sheikh, said eyewitnesses and police.
When locals surrounded the gang at Bibha Enterprise, a dealer of Grameenphone, during the robbery on Thursday night, Belal and Zahid managed to escape while five others, caught by the angry mob, were beaten to death on the spot, police said.
Residents of Bastuhara Colony sharply reacted when the body of Ahmad Ali, one of the five killed robbers, was taken there for burial from Bagerhat General Hospital morgue on Saturday evening.
Ahmad Ali's sister Fatema Begum told police that absconding Belal Hossain is ringleader of the gang that committed robbery in the Grameenphone dealer's office.
The five killed 'robbers' are Riazuddin, 25, Khan Afsaruddin, 50, Mohammad Imran, 22, Ahmad Ali, 40, and Hafizur Rahman, 25.
Police recovered Tk 23 lakh 89 thousand and 662 out of Tk 25 lakh looted by robbers from the Grameenphone dealer's office and seized a shortened gun, a pistol, a bullet and a dagger from the gang's possession.
Sheikh Ashikur Rahman, manager of Bibha Enterprise, lodged an FIR on Friday accusing nine unidentified people in connection with the robbery.
Police filed two cases -- one under Arms Act against nine people and the other against over a thousand unnamed people in connection with mob attack on robbers.
