44 mutineers jailed in Rajshahi

A special court of Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB) here yesterday sentenced 44 jawans of 37 Rifle Battalion of BGB to different jail terms ranging from four months to seven years for their involvement in a mutiny in 2009. The Special Court-17, headed by BGB Kushtia Sector Commander Col Nazrul Islam Sarker, also fined each of the soldiers Tk 100. Of the convicts, five were jailed for highest seven years each, two for six years, four for five years, two for four years, four for three years, seven for two years, one for one month and 19 for four months each, said Prosecutor Lt Col Zahid Hassan. Nayeb Subedar Nazrul Islam filed a case in this regard on November 11 last year. The case statement noted the accused revolted and looted firearms and ammunition from the battalion armoury. They also fired blank shots and desecrated a portrait of Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed, the then director general of BDR, mentioned Col Nazrul Islam. Charges were framed against the accused on January 2 for their participation in the mutiny at the battalion on February 26, 2009 that killed 74 people, including 57 army officials in Dhaka. Eleven prosecution witnesses gave depositions against the accused. The court handed down the punishment after analysing video footages and other official records which proved the accused guilty.
