Farmer's death sparks protest

Traffic movement on Magura-Jessore road came to a halt for over three hours as angry villagers blocked road in Sadar upazila following death of a farmer in a road accident yesterday. Police said Kuddus Biswas, 55, a farmer of Jagla village in same upazila, died on the spot after he was hit by a speedy pick-up van at Jagla Bazar at about 9am. Following the incident, a large number of local people blocked the road demanding construction of a speed breaker disrupting traffic movement for about three and a half hours. However, they withdrew their programme at 1:00pm on assurance of fulfilling their demand by local political leaders, officials of administration and Roads and Highways Department. During the roadblock, hundreds of vehicles remained stranded on both sides of the highway, causing untold sufferings to the travellers.
