<i>Pet elephant tramples its master to death</i>

A pet elephant trampled to death its master, Juri upazila unit BNP president Jalal Uddin, at Lathitila Kalimati in Juri upazila of Moulvibazar district yesterday morning. Adding to the tragedy, Hason Khan of village Haporpur in Juri upazila, who was on the way to meet Jalal Uddin, died of a cardiac arrest after hearing that Jalal had been killed by his pet elephant. Jalal Uddin, 50, also a former union parishad chairman, tried to clam down his elephant named 'Saddamer Bachcha' when it turned crazy on Tuesday afternoon, said locals and Juri upazila administration sources. When he tried to control the elephant again yesterday morning, it suddenly attacked and trampled him. Jalal was rushed to a local clinic where the on-duty physician declared him dead. The killer elephant also caused damage to a Pajero jeep and some crops before entering a nearby forest. On information police, forest department officials and hundreds of locals rushed to the spot. In a bid to prevent the 'mad' elephant from doing further harm, forest department staffs with the help of local police and people were trying to kill or confine it in the forest as of filing this report at 4:00pm. The businessmen of Juri upazila sadar closed down their shops and business centres to condole the tragic death of Jalal Uddin.
