5 sued on war crime charges in Patuakhali

Five alleged collaborators of Pakistani occupation forces have been sued on charges of killing three people and looting five houses at Galachipa upazila headquarters in 1971. Fouzia Begum, president of Bangladesh Mohila Awami League Galachipa upazila unit, filed the case with the judicial magistrate's court on Tuesday. The accused are Shah Alam, 56, headmaster of Galachipa High School, Anwar Hossain alias Shahjahan Khondaker, 55, headmaster of Pankhali high School, Ishaq Ali, 56 headmaster of Haridevpur High School, SM Nur, 65 former teacher of Galachipa High School, and Abdul Gafur, 70, of Bauria village under the upazila. In the case statement, the complainant alleged that the accused with the help of Pakistani army attacked the houses of Ranjit Kumar Das, Pranab Kumar Das, Jagadish Kumar Saha, Arun Kumar Saha and Liton Biswas at Galachipa upazila headquarters on May 15 in 1971 and looted valuables worth over Tk 20 lakh. The accused also picked up Radhika Chandra Saha, father of Jagadish kumar Saha, Niranjan Biswas, uncle of Liton Biswas, and Arun Kumar Saha from their houses and handed them over to Pakistani army who later killed them, the complainant said. The court took the case into cognisance and asked the office-in-charge of Galachipa Police Station to take necessary steps after proper investigation.
