Robberies at houses of expatriates
Criminals in guise of relatives took away cash and valuables in Madaripur on Tuesday while robbers looted three houses in Sylhet and Manikganj on Monday and the day before.
Two criminals in guise of relatives looted valuables and cash worth Tk 4 lakh at Goalkanda village under Shibchar upazila of Madaripur on Tuesday night, reports our correspondent.
Neighbours said, at around 9:00pm on Tuesday night one Ali Hossain along with his friend came to visit 'distant in-law' Saudi Arabia expatriate Kuddus Talukder's house with three bottles of mango juice and some biscuits.
After dinner, Ali Hossain asked his mother-in-law to serve the juice among the members of the house. Drinking the juice, Kuddus, his wife and two sons, one of them a candidate of SSC examination this year, fell unconscious .
Later, the criminals looted four tolas of gold, Tk two lakh, four mobile sets and other valuables from the house.
Robbers looted cash and valuables worth Tk 28 lakh from two houses in Golapganj upazila of Sylhet leaving six people injured early Monday, reports UNB.
Police quoting local sources said, an armed gang numbering 20/25 swooped on the house of Kuwait expatriate Hafiz Safar Uddin of Sunampur village at dead of night.
They looted cash Tk 65,000, thirty-five tolas of gold ornaments and 10 mobile phone sets from the house taking the house members hostage at gunpoint.
Four of them -- Shafiq Uddin, Faysal, Akter Mia and Safar Uddin's expatriate brother-in-law Abdul Basit -- were beaten up by the robbers as they tried to resist the gang.
In another incident, a gang of 10/12 entered the house of one Nimar Ali at Mukitola village in the same upazila cutting the grill of the house at around 3:30am.
They looted cash Tk 3.80 lakh, 24 tolas of gold jewellery and three mobile phone sets injuring Nimar Ali's sister Saleha and expatriate brother Abdur Rahim.
In Manikganj, robbers looted valuables from a teacher's house, keeping his family hostage at gunpoint, injuring three, one in bullet at Dhakaijora village in Shibalaya upazila early Monday.
Police said a gang of 20/25 stormed into schoolteacher Alauddin's house breaking open the door at about 1:00am.
They looted 20 tolas of gold ornaments, 40 tolas of silver ornaments, cash Tk 60,000 and two cell phone sets, tying the family members with rope, keeping them hostage at gunpoint.
The robbers also mercilessly beat up Alauddin, his wife Latifa Begum, his daughter Kaniz Fatema and fired gun shot at his son Sheikh Farid, leaving him seriously injured.
The injured were admitted to Sadar hospital from where Farid was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) as his condition deteriorated.
In Pabna, police arrested four people on Tuesday in connection with Sunday's robbery at a house at village Jorgasa in Santhia upazila.
During robbery, by the gang killed a woman and injured four others, reports our correspondent.
The arrestees are Salauddin alias Shondo, 32, son of Abdul Hai of village Sundarkandi, Kamal Hossain, 30, son of Adesh Sardar of village Hapania, Kop Housh, 32, son of Amzad Hossain of the same village and Rafikul Islam, 35, son of Md. Fakir Pramanik of village Jorgasa in Santhia upazila.
Investigation officer (IO) of the case, Md. Abdul Gaffar, also a sub inspector (SI) at Santhia police station said police arrested them as prime suspects from their villages early Tuesday.
On Sunday, a gang of robbers attacked the house of Sunil Kumar Sarkar at village Jorgasa. The robbers numbering 15 to 20, hacked five members of the family leaving Ela Rani Sarkar, 45, wife of Sunil Kumar Sarkar dead on the spot.
