A group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) men yesterday assaulted an activist of their rival faction on Rajshahi University campus. Witnesses said, the BCL activists led by Hirok Ahmed of mass communication and journalism department, Shamir of marketing department and Selim of social work department hit Sabyasachi Halder of finance and accounting department on his head with iron rods in front of Rabindra Arts Building at around 11.00pm and left the scene. Critically injured Sabyasachi was admitted to the university medical centre. RU BCL leaders alleged some activists are involved in illegal activities and factional clashes on the campus as the organisation has been running without any leadership since August last year. BCL central committee suspended the activities of its RU unit on August 8, 2010 following a factional clash on the campus that left 10 activists injured. Two RU BCL factions-- one led by unit president Awal Kabir Joy and the other by its general secretary Majedul Islam Opu clashed on the day over establishing supremacy on the campus. After the clash, police arrested BCL university unit general secretary Majedul Islam Opu and two activists Joy-led faction. On August 15, BCL worker Nasirullah Nasim was stabbed by his rival party men at Shah Mukhdoom Hall. He died at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Agust 23. Following the incident, BCL central leadership suspended the university unit president Awal Kabir joy and general secretary Majedul Islam Opu. The university authorities expelled six BCL activists temporarily on September 6 on charges of killing Nasim.
