Wife tortured to death for dowry in C'nawabganj
One jailed in N'ganj dowry case
A housewife was tortured to death allegedly by her husband for dowry at Prosadpur under Rohonpur municipal area of Gomostapur upazila on Monday evening.
The dead was identified as, Khadiza Begum,20, wife of Abdus Salam,28, of Prosadpur-Hatathpara village.
Victim's father Zillur Rahman of PTI area in the town alleged that two years ago Salam married Khadiza. They have a seven-month-old son.
But Salam regularly tortured Khadiza for dowry money after their marriage.
Khadiza was forced to bring Tk 50,000 from her father. Before that her father gave Salam Tk 20,000. As Khadiza failed to bring more dowry money, Salam beat her up mercilessly at his house at around 10:00 am on Monday morning.
Neighbours took seriously injured Khadiza to Gomostapur health complex and called her her father over mobile phone.
Meanwhile, her condition deteriorated and the on-duty doctor sent her to Chapainawabganj Adhunik Sadar Hospital but she died on the way.
Zillur Rahman said there were several injury marks on Khadiza's body.
Police recovered the body and sent it to Sadar hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police said, Abdus Salam and other members of his family went into hiding immediately after the incident.
In Narayanganj, one Rony Khan was sentenced to one-and- a-half years imprisonment in absentia in a dowry case on Monday.
Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Ashrafuzzaman Jilani handed down the verdict, reports UNB.
Rony Khan is son of late Hasanuddin of Maddhya Badda in the capital.
According to the case, Rony married Shirina Akter, daughter of Siraj Mia in Dhachhi of Rupganj upazila on July 26, 2007. Since then he used to torture her for bringing dowry.
On September 16, 2010, he again tortured Shirina and ousted her from home with her daughter. Shirina later filed a case with the court.
