Robbers kill one,loot 12 houses in 4 districts

Robbers killed one person and looted at least a dozen houses in Pabna, Munshiganj, Narayanganj and Barisal districts yesterday and the day before. A woman was stabbed to death and her husband and three in-laws were injured by robbers in Santhia upazila of Pabna early yesterday, reports our correspondent. Officer-in-charge AKM Rezaul Islam of Santhia police station said a gang of robbers, numbering 15 to 20, entered the house of Sunil Kumar Sarkar at Jorgachha in the upazila at about 1:00am. They attacked Sunil with sharp weapon as he tried to resist them. The gang also stabbed Sunil's wife Ela Rani Sarkar, brothers Shushil and Shudhir and nephew Anup when they tried to save Sunil. The robbers took away gold ornaments and three mobile sets and left the house. Ela, 45, succumbed to her injuries at Santhia upazila health complex at about 8:00am. The other injured were shifted to Pabna General Hospital. In Munshiganj, armed robbers looted valuables from five houses at Majidpur Dayahata village under Sreenagar upazila early yesterday, reports our correspondent. The robbers looted valuables worth about Tk 3 lakh including cash and gold ornaments. They also took away documents of land property. The gang of 14 to 15 looted the houses for more than an hour from 2:30 am, locals said. The robbers first attacked the house of Swapon Chowdhury and then swooped on the house of Ashru Chowdhury which was under lock and key. Swapon Chowdhury was injured as the robbers hit him with a machete. Later the robbers looted valuables from three houses near the house of former president Prof Badruddoza Chowdhury. Three school teachers and their families lived in the three houses. The robbers tied the house members with ropes and continued looting. When people of nearby houses rushed to the spot the robbers fled away. In Narayanganj, robbers looted gold ornaments, cash and other valuables from two houses in Sadar and Sonargaon upazilas early Saturday, reports UNB. Local people said, breaking open the door a gang of armed robbers numbering 10/12 entered the house of Japan expatriate Bhasan Dewan at Ganjkumaria village in Sadar upazila at about 3:00am. Later, the gang looted 30 tolas of gold ornaments, Tk 3 lakh in cash and other valuables keeping the house members hostage at gun point. In another incident, a gang of robbers numbering 25/30 stormed into the house of Saudi Arabia expatriate Nobi Hossain at Borabo village in Sonargaon upazila at about 2:00 am. Later, the gang took the house members hostage at gun point and looted Tk 7.55 lakh in cash, 18.5 tolas of gold ornaments, four mobile phone sets and other valuables. In yet another robbery, an armed gang looted valuables worth about Tk 10 lakh from four houses in Ujirpur and Gournadi upazilas of Barisal early Saturday, leaving five people injured. Sources said, a gang of armed robbers looted valuables worth Tk 3 lakh from the house of Brunei expatriate Milon Sardar at Mahilara village in Gournadi upazila. Sekandar Sardar, 65, father of Milon, was injured by the robbers as he tried to resist them. The same gang also looted valuables worth Tk 2 lakh from the house of Abdul Hakim Sardar of the same village injuring three of his family members--- Aleya Begum, 56, Kalam Sardar, 31, and Shahin Sardar, 22. On the same night another armed gang looted valuables worth Tk 2 lakh from the house of Shyamol Das and cash and valuables worth Tk 3 lakh from the house of Shangkar Das at Sholak village in Ujirpur upazila. The robbers at one stage stabbed Shyamol Das indiscriminately leaving him critically injured. He was admitted to the upazila health complex.
