Former UP chairman murder sparks protest

Former chairman of Khata Modhupur Union Parishad under Saidpur upazila was murdered in Kamar-Pukur Kala Bagan area near Saidpur-Dhaka highway early yesterday. Family and police sources said the victim, Mokhlesur Rahman Sarker, also a freedom fighter, was returning home at Khata Modhupur village from Saidpur town riding a motorbike. When he reached Kamar-Pukur Kala Bagan point of the highway at around 12:30am, a gang of criminals intercepted Mokhlesur, dragged him to a nearby cropland and slit the throat. Being informed, police rushed to the spot in the morning, recovered the body and sent it to Nilphamari Hospital for autopsy. A half-day hartal, called by Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad Saidpur upazila unit, was observed in Saidpur town yesterday protesting the killing. Addressing a rally, the freedom fighters demanded immediate arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers. Officer-in-charge of Saidpur Police Station Ismail Hossain said it was a pre-planned murder, as the killers did not take away his money, mobile phone and motorbike. Police Superintendent Alamgir Rahman and other high officials visited the spot. No one was arrested in connection with the murder as of filing of this report at 3:30pm. Mokhlesur Rahman contested the parliamentary election on Awami League ticket from Nilphamari- 4 constituency (Saidpur- Kishoreganj) in 1991. He quit AL in 1996 and joined Jatiya Party (Ershad).
