Several hundred people, including staff of Gaibandha BSCIC estate, brought out a procession in the district town yesterday demanding smooth power supply to the small industrial estate and steps to check theft of power transformers from there. Secretary of Gabandha Small Industries Owners Association Sanjit Kumar handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner Md Shahidul Islam demanding immediate solution to power crisis. In the memo, they stated that on the night of January 20, a gang of armed robbers tied two night guards of the industrial estate with rope and beat them up. Then the robbers took away two power transformers. Since then, power supply to BSCIC estate remained snapped and production to 14 out of 28 industrial units came to a halt, they said. They further said due to frequent power outage, robberies occur frequently at the estate. The sufferers alleged that despite repeated requests, the executive engineer of PDB did not pay heed to their appeal for smooth supply of power. In the memo, the owners of the industries demanded regular police patrol to ensure security of the industrial units and workers as well.
