Sultan Mela begins in Narail today

A six-day Sultan Mela will begin here today. Sultan Birth Anniversary Celebration Committee, Sultan Foundation and district administration have jointly chalked out an elaborate programme to mark the occasion. Today's programme include children's art competition, discussion on life and work of the renowned artist, games, sports, cultural programme and prize distribution ceremony. Md Moshiur Rahman, divisional commissioner of Khulna, will inaugurate the fair on the premises of Narail Government Victoria College at 3:00 pm. Another children's art competition will be held on the premises of SM Sultan Art Museum at his village Masimdia in the district. SM Sultan (1923-1994) was born at Masimdia village on August 10, 1923. Sultan became a renowned artist although he had no institutional qualification. He travelled to different places of India. He held his first exhibition of artwork in Simla in 1946. For sometime, he lived and worked in Kashmir. After the partition of the sub-continent in 1947, he returned to Narail.
