A divorced woman was killed after rape at Krishnanagar village in Tala upazila on Tuesday night. The victim is Subhadra Rani Sarkar, 38, daughter of late Basudev Sarkar of the village. Police quoted locals as saying that Subhadra Rani Sarkar married Sadhan Kumar of Mashiadanga village in the same upazila about 20 years ago. Sadhan divorced Subhadra on ground of infertility about 10 years ago and since then she has been residing at her father's house, police said. A gang of criminals entered the house at midnight and strangled Subhadra Rani after gang-raped. As locals found the body lying inside the house yesterday morning, they informed the police who went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Satkhira Hospital for autopsy. A case was filed with Tala Police Station, but no one was arrested as of 6:00pm yesterday. In Magura, three people were yesterday sentenced to life imprisonment for violating a girl in 2002. The convicts are Nur Islam, 25, and his accomplices Nabir Hossain, 27, and Barik, 26, of Gajdurba village in Shalikha upazila, reports UNB. The court also fined Nur Islam Tk 20,000 and two others Tk 10,000 each, in default, they are to suffer three months more in Jail. According to the prosecution, the convicts picked up the girl, a student of a local madrasa, from their house on the night of December 28, 2002. Later, they took her to an abandoned house at the village and raped her one after another. Victim's father filed a case against seven culprits the following day. After examining the record and witnesses, Judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Ruhul Amin Khandaker handed down the verdict. He acquitting four others as charges brought against them could not be proved.
