Mutiny by Marishya Battalion
Verdict in case against 74 Feb 5
The special court-15, set up at BGB Rangamati Sector Headquarters, yesterday fixed February 5 for judgement in the mutiny case against 74 jawans of 9 Battalion of Marishya Zone under Baghaichhari upazila of the district.
The court, headed by BGB Chittagong Sector Commander Col Zahedur Rahman, fixed the date. All the 74 accused were produced in the court and sent back to Rangamati jail on completion of their arguments with the prosecution witnesses.
Fifty-two out of 102 prosecution witnesses gave their depositions before the special court. All the 74 jawans claimed innocence and appealed to the court to acquit them of the mutiny charge.
Prosecutor Lt Col Munir Hasan first gave statement against the accused jawans who also argued with him. After recoding statements and completion of arguments, the court fixed February 5 for judgement in the case and adjourned the trial proceedings until 2:00pm on the day
Mutiny took place at three of the five battalions under Rangamati sector on February 26 in 2009. These are 12 Rifles Battalion at Rajanagar in Longudu, 9 Rifles Battalion at Marishya in Baghaichhari and 18 Rifles Battalion at Chhotohorina in Barkal.
On Sunday, the same court fixed the same date for judgement in the mutiny case against 23 jawans of 18 battalion at Chhotohorina in Barkal upazila.
Of the accused, 22 claimed innocence and appealed to the court to acquit them of the mutiny charge. Only an accused named Subeder Major Md Shah Alam confessed to his involvement in mutiny at the battalion on February 26 in 2009.
Prosecutor Lt Col Mehedi Hasan first gave statement against the accused jawans who argued with him. After receiving statements and arguments from both prosecutors and the accused, the court fixed February 5 for judgement in the mutiny case and adjourned the trial proceedings until 9:00am on the day.
