9 mayor candidates in Khulna, Satkhira lose security deposit

Nine mayoral candidates in four municipalities of Khulna and Satkhira districts lost their security deposit for failing to get one-eight of the total votes as per Election Commission (EC) law. In Khulna, three mayor aspirants in two municipalities--Paikgachha and Chalna--have lost their security deposit in the election held on January 13, reports our staff correspondent. They are AL rebel candidate Kumaresh Biswas in Chalna municipality, and BNP candidate Maftun Ahmed and Islami Shasantantra Andolan Bangladesh candidate Gazi Abdus Salam in Paikgacha municipality. Kumaresh Biswas bagged only 58 votes while Maftun Ahmed and Gazi Abdus Salam got 131 votes each. In Chalna municipality, 8,177 out of 9,481 votes were cast in the election. Percentage of votes cast here is 86.25. In Paikgacha municipality, 9,537 out of 11,173 votes were cast in the election. Percentage of votes cast here is 85, said Khulna District Election Office. Our Satkhira Correspondent reported that six out of 13 mayoral candidates in Satkhira and Kalaroa municipalities lost their security deposit in January 13 elections. They are AL candidate Sheikh Ashraful Haque and independent candidates Sheikh Akbar Hossain and Syed Iktiar Ali Titu in Satkhira municipality, and AL rebel candidates Arafat Hossain, Kazi Abdul Wahab and Rafiqul Islam in Kalaroa municipality. BNP and Jamaat backed mayoral candidate MA Jalil won the election defeating his nearest rival Sheikh Azhar Hossain of JP (Ershad) in Satkhira, while BNP rebel candidate Akhtarul Islam won the election defeating BNP backed candidate Sharifuzzaman Shahin in Kalaroa. Seventeen councillor candidates in Satkhira municipalities also lost their deposit. They are Nizam Uddin, Amanullah, Rejaul Karim, Fakhrul Islam, Nazrul Islam, Rokonuzzaman, Azizul Khalil, Matiar Rahman, Sheikh Abdus Sadek, Mahmud Ali Sumon, Masum Billah Khoka, Monowarul Islam, Nazmul Khan Chowdhury, Abul Kalam, Abidul Haque and Abdur Rahman.
