Hundreds of students of various departments of Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (Ruet) yesterday morning formed a human chain in front the administrative building and besieged the university main gate for one hour to press home their 12-point demand. They also threatened to boycott classes and examinations from today if their demands are not fulfilled within deadline. The demands include appointment of new teachers and construction of a full-fledged central shaheed minar on the campus, internet facility at residential halls, preservation and collection of liberation war memories on the campus, appointment of physical instructor for gymnasium, reconstruction of the auditorium which was damaged by fire a few months ago and more new buses for transport of students and naming of female halls. Earlier on Thursday, the students placed a memorandum to the vice chancellor, Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury, to meet their demands within 48 hours' ultimatum. They also boycotted their classes and examinations and besieged the administrative building on the day. At a rally, they said that they had met the university authorities several times for meeting their demands but the authorities are yet to take any initiative to meet the demands. They alleged that they faced an acute shortage of teachers as many posts are lying vacant in different departments including electrical engineering and civil engineering departments. They also alleged that the university authorities did not construct a full-fledged Shaheed Minar on the campus after establishment of the university. They also staged a demonstration on the campus in support of their demands. Later, at a press conference held at the university cafeteria, they decided to boycott all classes today. Contacted, Prof Sirajul Karim Chowdhury, vice chancellor of the university told this correspondent that the university authorities would take steps to meet the demands of students as soon as possible.
