Post-election violence left at least nine people injured in Jhenidah and Dinajpur yesterday. In Jhenidah, supporters of mayor-elect Kazi Ashraful Azam and defeated AL candidate Toyebur Rahman clashed at Shailkupa upazila headquarters yesterday noon, leaving at least eight people from both sides injured. Of the injured, AL activist Kazi Nauraj, 45 of Monoharpur village, was admitted to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital while the rest were given first at Shailkupuka Upazila Health Complex. Police and witnesses said, Khokon, a supporter of Toyebur, started passing remarks against mayor--elect Kazi Ashraful Azam who was also an AL rebel candidate in the election to Shailkupa municipality held on January 13. When newly elected councillor Mir Mozammel tried to prevent him from making remarks against Azam, Khokon swooped on him. Hearing the news, AL activists belonging to Azam and Toyebur, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked each other. Police rushed to spot and dispersed the clashing groups. Mayor-elect Azam alleged the outsiders hired by Toyebur were involved in the clash. Defeated mayoral candidate Toyebur denied the allegation, saying that Azam and his men are responsible for the incident. Our Dinajpur correspondent reported that a journalist of local newspaper Karotoa was beaten up allegedly by the hired goons of incumbent mayor of Birampur municipality yesterday morning. Witnesses said some people called Mostafizur Rahman out of his office in the municipality complex at around 10:00am.
