10 injured in Sirajganj post-poll violence

At least 10 people were injured and two shops and three houses ransacked yesterday in separate incidents of post election violence in the district town. Of the injured, four were admitted to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital. Police said, supporter of defeated candidate Golam Mostafa of Chakkopdas village attacked some people of Uttarpara village allegedly for not casting votes in favour of their candidate. The two groups swooped on each other with brickbats and sticks and ransacked two shops and three houses, injuring 10 people from both sides. Meanwhile, police arrested two people from the spot. Earlier, BNP backed candidate advocate Mokaddes Ali was elected next mayor of Sirajganj municipality yesterday, defeating advocate KM Hossain Ali of Awami League by a large margin in the municipal election. Advocate Mokaddes bagged 36,315 votes while his main rival advocate Hossain Ali secured 24,102 votes. In Kazipur municipality BNP backed Abdus Salam was elected mayor by securing 2,867 votes while his nearest rival GM Talukdar of Awami League got 2,454 votes. In Raiganj Mosharraf Hossain of Jamaat-e-Islami was elected mayor getting 2,526 votes while his nearest candidate secured 2,468 votes. In Ullapara, BNP backed Mohammad Billal Hossain bagged 11035 votes while his main rival got 10,924 votes. In Shahjadpur, Mohammad Nazrul Islam of BNP was elected mayor by securing 18,288 votes defeating his nearest rival who bagged 14,276 votes. In Belkuchi municipality AL backed Mofiz Uddin Khan got 12,204 votes to become new mayor while his nearest candidate got 11,999 votes.
