Intra-party feud behind Dinajpur AL's debacle
Intra-party feud, lack of coordination among the party men and more than one party candidates for the same post led to election debacle of the ruling Awami League in five out of six municipalities of the district.
Of the six mayoral posts, BNP backed candidates won three while the Awami League, Jamaat and independent candidates bagged one each.
In Bochaganj municipality, Awami League backed mayoral candidate Md Abdul Sabur Master was declared unofficially elected. But his nearest rival BNP backed candidate Md Aslam alleged that election results were tampered with and his supporters staged a protest in front returning officer's office.
AL backed candidate Md Shajahan Ali Sarker Putu, also the incumbent mayor of Phulbari municipality, lost his seat to an independent candidate Murtoza Sarker Manik. BNP backed candidate Md Habibur Rahman was his nearest rival.
Local AL sources intra-party feud led to Shajahan's debacle in the municipality polls.
In Birganj, Jamaat backed mayoral candidate Maulana Hanif won the election. Five AL rebels candidates contested for the mayoral post of this constituency.
In Birampur municipality, BNP backed mayoral candidate was declared unofficially elected. Two Awami League candidates--Akkas Ali Mondol and Hossain Ali--were in the mayoral race.
BNP backed candidate Shakawat Hossain Shilpi won the election to Hakimpur municipality, defeating AL candidate Jamil Hossain.
In Dinajpur municipality, BNP backed mayoral candidate Sayed Jahangir Alam was declared unofficially elected. Independent candidate Altaf Uddin was his nearest rival.
