28 mayor aspirants in Moulvibazar
Intra-party rivalry may hit big two parties
Twenty-eight mayoral candidates are contesting for the January 18 election in five municipalities under Moulvibazar district.
There are more than one candidates belonging to AL in all the five municipalities while BNP failed to field single candidates in three municipalities of the district.
Intra-party rivalry about mayoral candidature has given rise to conflict among local units of AL and BNP.
In Moulvibazar municipality, there are four mayor candidates -- sitting Mayor Fayzul Karim Mayun (BNP), Saifur Rahman Babul (AL), Nahid Ahmed (AL) and Muhibur Rahman Jalali.
Seven mayor candidates in Srimongal municipality are sitting Mayor Md Ahad Miah (BNP), Md Mohsin Miah Modhu (BNP), Abdul Rahim (AL), Khokon Singha, Nazrul Islam, Abdul Mobin Tarafdar, and Bhubaneswar Purkayestha (AL).
Candidates in Kamalganj municipality are sitting Mayor Hasin Afroz Chowdhury (BNP), Iqbal Parvez Chaudhury (AL), Muhibur Rahman (Talamiz-e-Islamia), Abu Ibrahim Zamsed (BNP), Syed Ibrahim Md Abdullah (Jamaat), and Aslam Iqbal (AL).
In Kulaura municipality, five candidates are in the race. They are sitting Mayor Kamal Ahmed Juned (BNP), Shafi Alam Yunus (AL), Shafiul Alam (AL), Motiur Rahman Motoi (BNP) and Enamul Islam (Jatiya Party- Ershad).
Contestants in Baralekha municipality are Rafiqul Islam Sundor (AL), Fakhrul Islam (BNP), Khijir Ahmed (Jamaat), Abdun Nur and Khalilur Rahman.
Syed Bazlul Karim Mafique, AL central coordinator of municipal election for Sylhet division, in a press conference at Moulvibazar Press Club on Sunday noon said Saifur Rahman Babul has been given party support for mayoral election in Moulvibazar municipality.
“Party Chief and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked Awami League activists to work for Saifur Rahman Babul. As the municipal election is a non-political one, there is no written papers on party support,” he said.
Lawmaker from Moulvibazar Sadar Syed Mohsin Ali, AL leader Syed Siddiqul Hasan, district Jatiya Party General Secretary Syed Shahab Uddin, and district Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) President Abdul Haque were present in the press conference, among others.
Moulvibazar district unit components of AL-led grand alliance -- Jatiya Party, National Awami Party (NAP-Mujaffar), Gonotontri Party, Workers Party and JSD-Inu have extended support to AL mayor candidate Saifur Rahman Babul.
Nahid Ahmed, general secretary of district unit of Jubo League, is also contesting for mayor post for Moulvibazar municipality election. A large faction of Moulvibazar AL including district unit General Secretary Nesar Ahmed, former whip Md Azizur Rahman and former MP Husne Ara Wahid are backing Nahid Ahmed in the mayoral race.
District BNP leader and sitting Mayor of Moulvibazar municipality Md Fayzul Karim Mayun in a press release on Sunday alleged violation of the election code of conduct and plan of polls rigging by two mayor candidates belonging to AL in Moulvibazar.
Demanding deployment of army at every polling station to ensure peaceful polling, he said, “Untoward situation may occur at any time as identified criminals belonging to AL are in the field. And so, deployment of sufficient law enforcers is needed before the poll.”
Meanwhile, a portion of Moulvibazar district BNP, known as followers of former lawmaker Naser Rahman, also son of late finance minister M Saifur Rahman, are opposing Mayun's candidature, although he is the lone candidate from BNP in the municipality.
