Patuakhali: Youth jailed for 7 days for bribing voters A mobile court on Tuesday sentenced a youth to seven days' imprisonment on charge of distributing money among the voters at Kalerpukur par area in the town, according to our correspondent. The court also fined the convict, Doha, 25, of Kalerpukur par Tk 20,000, in default, he is suffer 45 days more in prison. A joint team of Rab and police arrested Doha while he was buying votes. The joint team also recovered Tk 9,000 from him. Mobil court sources said Doha was buying votes for Obaidullah Nahid, a councillor candidate for ward no 2 in Patuakhali municipality. When Doha was giving money to an unidentified woman in front of a tea stall owned by Goni Mia, police and Rab team arrested him, sources added. Meanwhile, forty-six candidates are contesting for mayoral posts in today's election to 10 municipalities of Patuakhali, Barguna and Bhola districts. Of them, five mayoral candidates are in Patuakhali sadar and three in Kalapara municipalities under Patuakhali district, five in Barguna, six in Amtali, six in Patharghata and two in Betagi municipalities under Barguna district, four in Bhola, three in Daulatkhan, six in Borhanuddin and four in Lalmohan municipalities under Bhola district. Chandpur: 5 mayor candidates pull out of race on last day Five mayoral candidates in Chandpur municipality withdrew their nomination papers on Monday, the last date for withdrawal of candidature. The convict was identified as Ali Hossain Sarker, 50, son of late Fahim Uddin of Sarkar Para in the town, reports UNB. Police said they arrested Ali while he was distributing leaflets asking for not casting votes for Dewan Kamal Ahmed, a grand alliance backed mayor candidate, at Munshipara Primary School polling center in the morning.
