Srimongal's talk of the town

Mayoral contest between uncle and nephew, both influential local leaders of main opposition BNP, has become talk of the town in Srimongal municipality under Moulvibazar district. Although the central BNP has selected Md Mohsin Miah Modhu, a former chairman of the municipality, as the party backed candidate for the mayoral post, the uncle incumbent Mayor Md Ahad Miah, also former vice president of Moulvibazar district BNP, is contesting for the same. During the ongoing campaign, both of them have alleged violation of election code against each other while the styles of campaign used by opponent uncle and nephew have become a subject matter of gossip among voters. Moulvibazar BNP is apparently divided into two factions one backed by former lawmaker M Naser Rahman, son of former finance minister late M Saifur Rahman, and the other by former woman lawmaker Begum Khaleda Robbani. Ahad is a leading follower of Naser Rahman while his nephew Mohsin is blessed by Khaleda Robbani. Ahad was elected chairman (equivalent to present mayoral post) of Srimongal municipality in 2004. Earlier in 1988, he was elected lawmaker from Jatiya Party during the regime of HM Ershad. Later he joined BNP. Mohsin was elected chairman of the municipality in 1993 and then again in 1998. Meanwhile, Awami League (AL) leader Md Abdur Rahim, who was elected chairman of Srimongal municipality in 1984 and 1989, has got support from his party for mayoral race this time. The lawmaker elected from Moulvibazar Sadar constituency is backing him. Ahad Miah, Mohsin Miah and Abdur Rahim seem to be the main contestants in the election, locals said.
