More than one candidate both from the Awami League (AL) led alliance and BNP are contesting for the mayoral posts in Satkhira and Kalaroa municipalities, making their positions weak in today's poll. In Satkhira, six candidates are contesting for the mayor post. A triangular contest is evident among AL backed candidate incumbent Satkhira municipality Mayor and district AL Vice-president Sheikh Ashraful Haque, BNP backed candidate MA Jalil and Sheikh Azhar Hossain, district unit president of JP, a partner of AL led grand alliance. Sheikh Ashraful Haque is facing tough resistance from MA Jalil as AL led grand alliance failed to field a single candidate. In Kalaroa, six candidates are contesting for the post of mayor. Both AL and BNP failed to field single candidate in the election. The AL nominated their local leader Sheikh Amjad Hossain to vie for the mayoral post but ignoring the party decision, two other AL leaders Arafat Hossain and Kazi Abdul Wahab are contesting in the election as 'rebel' candidates. Local BNP leaders Sharifuzzaman Tuhin and Gazi Akhtarul Islam are facing each other in the election. Jamaat-e-Islami backed mayoral candidate Kazi Moniruzzaman will apparently be benefited due to the situation. As many as 93 councillor candidates and 27 candidates for women' reserved seats in Satkhira and Kalaroa municipalities are also in the race in today's election. Satkhira and Kalaroa municipalities saw hectic election campaign as mayor and councillor aspirants went door to door and held public meetings in different areas to woo voters while their supporters set a large number of colourful posters and distributed leaflets, giving the municipality areas a festive look. The candidates also made different pledges to the voters. Along with police, members of Border Guards Bangladesh will be deployed during today's polls in the two municipalities as most of the poll centres are risky.
