Clashes in four districts leave 3 killed, 70 hurt
Three people were killed and 70 others injured in clashes in Kurigram, Sunamganj, Sirajganj and Kishoreganj districts yesterday and on Saturday.
One person was killed and 20 were injured in a bloody clash over a piece of disputed land at Buraburi union under Ulipur upazila of Kurigram yesterday, reports our correspondent.
The deceased was identified as Abu Bakar Siddik, 47, son of late Akbar Ali of Fakir Para village under the union.
According to police and locals there was a long-standing dispute between Abu Bakar Siddik group and Shahidul Islam group over a 24-decimal land in Fakir Para village.
Yesterday, at around 6:00am both the groups locked in clash with sharp weapons in which 20 from both sides were injured.
Of the injured, Abu Bakar Siddik died at Kurigram Sadar Hospital at about 9.00am.
In Sunamganj, 20 people including 7 policemen sustained injuries in a clash over a jalmahal (water body) in Dharmapasha upazila yesterday afternoon.
Police lobbed 12 tear gas shells and fired 15 rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, reports our staff correspondent in Sylhet.
Locals and police said, the clash ensued at about 3pm as a group of hired fishermen belonging to one Ruhul Amin attempted to take possession of the water body known as Bade Madhyanagar Rupeshwar Jalmahal. Earlier it was under the possession of their rival Kader Member's people.
Both the groups used lethal weapons during the clash, police said.
Officer-in-charge of Dharmapasha PS Kazi Bazle Moula told this correspondent that locals swooped on the police contingent as the law enforcers reached the area by engine boats.
In Sirajganj, a trader was killed and 15 farmers were injured in an attack by their rivals at Dahokola village in Ullapara upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Nazrul Islam, 40, of the village, reports UNB.
Locals said Nazrul along with a group of farmers went to a field in the morning to install a shallow machine for irrigation.
At one stage a gang allegedly led by Iqbal, Mamun, Ejarot, Kanon, Swapan equipped with lethal weapons attacked, leaving Nazrul killed on the spot and others injured.
In, Kishoreganj, a man was killed and 15 others were injured in a bloody clash between two groups over a piece of land at Noagaon in Kotiadi upazila on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Tajul Islam.
Police said Tajul had enmity with his cousin Saiful Islam over the boundary line of a piece of land.
A clash ensued between the supporters of Tajul and Saiful over the land Saturday evening that left Tajul seriously wounded. Later, he succumbed to his injuries at Sadar hospital.
