Jhenidah: AL men accused of violating code of conduct
BNP leaders at a press conference here yesterday accused the ruling party men of violating election code of conduct in Sailkupa and Harinakundu municipalities and demanded deployment of army and Rab personnel at the polling centers, reports our correspondent.
They said the local AL men are damaging posters of their mayoral and councillor candidates and creating obstacles to electioneering in the two municipalities.
"We have informed the district AL leaders of the matter, but to no effect," the BNP leaders said, adding that the officers-in charge of Sailkupa and Harinakundu police stations are working in favour of AL candidates.
They urged the Election Commission to announce fresh election schedule for Jhenidah municipality. The Election Commission on Sunday cancelled the poll schedule for the municipality on grounds of violence and intimidation.
Former lawmaker and BNP central publicity secretary Mashiur Rahman, BNP mayoral candidates in Sailkupa and Harinakundu municipalities Khalilur Rahman and Jinnatul Haq, BNP district unit secretary MA Malek, leaders Akhteruzzaman, advocate MA Mazid, Munshi Kamal Azad Pannu were present.
Moulvibazar: JP, JSD mayor aspirants pull out of race
Jatiya Party (JP) mayoral candidate Tazammul Hossain Chowdhury and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) mayoral candidates Nazim Uddin Nazrul in Moulvibazar municipality withdrew their nominations on Sunday as their parties gave support to AL candidate Saifur Rahman Babul, according to our correspondent.
Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad), National Awami Party (NAP-Muzaffar), Gonotantri Party, Workers Party, and Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) at a press conference at the local press club on Sunday announced the name of AL leader Saifur Rahman Babul as mayor candidate of the grand alliance in Moulvibazar municipal election.
AL leader and local lawmaker Syed Mohsin Ali announced the name of Saifur Rahman Babul at the press conference. Tazammul Hossain Chowdhury and Nazim Uddin Nazrul were also present and pledged to work for Babul.
Lawmaker Syed Mohsin Ali said AL central committee has given nomination to Saifur Rahman Babul as party's mayoral candidate.
District Jubo League general secretary Nahid Ahmed is also in the race for the mayoral post of Moulvibazar municipality.
Khagrachhari: 5 mayor candidates remain as three withdraw
Three mayor and 12 councillor candidates in two of the three municipalities of the district withdrew their nominations on Sunday, the last day for withdrawal of candidature.
In Khagrachhari municipality, two mayor candidates--Srabani Chakma and Kajory Marma--and seven councillor candidates withdrew their nomination papers.
After withdrawal of the nominations, five candidates are now in the race for the mayoral post, 44 for councillor posts and 14 for the reserved seats in the municipality.
In Matiranga municipality, mayor candidate Humayan Morshad and four councillor candidates withdrew their nomination papers.
Now, eight people are contesting the election for the mayoral post, 47 for councillor posts and 16 women for the reserved seats in the municipality.
The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday cancelled the election schedule for Ramgarh municipality in the hill district on grounds of violence and intimidation.
