Verdict in case against 44 BDR men Feb 3

The verdict in the case against 44 mutineers of 37 Rifles (BDR) Battalion in Rajshahi will be delivered on February 3. Col Nazrul Islam Sarker, Kustia BDR sector commander and chief of the three-member judges' panel of the special court-17, announced the date following argument between the accused and prosecution witnesses. Two other members are Lt Col Gazi M Salah Uddin and Major Mohammad Ashfaq Hossain. The court, set up at Rajshahi sector headquarters, sent all the accused to jail and asked the authorities concerned to produce them in the court on February 3. Deputy Attorney General Mohamamd Selim was present. The special court on Sunday framed charges against the accused for their involvement in the mutiny at the battalion on February 26, 2009. They were charged with staging mutiny at the battalion headquarters, firing gunshots and desecrating portrait of then BDR DG Shakil Ahmed. Prosecutor Lt Col Zahid Hassan read out the allegations against the accused and submitted video footage and list of witnesses to the court. He alleged that some of the accused took part in the mutiny although they were on leave and attacked the then Rajshahi sector commander Col Ehiya Azam Khan. Nayeb Subedar Nazrul Islam filed the case with the court. Of the accused, 15 confessed to their involvement in the mutiny while the rest 29 claimed innocence. Prosecutor Lt Col Zahid Hasan requested the court to show sympathy to 15 accused who confessed to their guilt and sought mercy on Sunday.
