Rajshahi: Symbols distributed among candidates

Election symbols were distributed among 52 mayor aspirants, 374 councillor candidates and 119 women candidates for the reserved seats in 11 municipalities of Rajshahi on Monday, according to our staff correspondent. Returning officers distributed the election symbols among the candidates at respective upazila headquarters. Of the mayor aspirants, 23 are from Awami League, 20 from BNP, three each from Jatiya Party and Jamaat-e Islami and the rest three are independent candidates. Awami League fielded single mayor candidates in Arani, Kesharhat and Bhawaniganj municipalities while BNP in Godagari and Bhawaniganj municipalities. In other municipalities, both the parties have more than one mayor aspirants. Local BNP and AL leaders blamed lack of coordination among the district leaders for their failure to select appropriate candidates. Anil Sarker, former organising secretary of the district AL, said the party lawmakers did not consult with senior leaders before selecting candidates. Rajshahi district AL General Secretary Omar Faruk Chowdhury MP and district BNP president Nadim Mostafa said they will resolve the problems soon.

Magura: Daughter becomes rival of AL candidate

Awami League district unit President Altaf Hossain, his daughter Kaniz Akhter Koli and Rebel AL candidate Tapan Kumar Roy on Wednesday submitted nomination to contest for the mayoral post in the upcoming election to Magura municipality scheduled for January 27, reports our correspondent. Four candidates from two rival groups of district BNP filed nomination papers for the mayoral post. They are Dr Mahbubul Haque Siddique, Farukuzzaman Faruk, Golam Sarwar Molla and Ayub Hossain. Meanwhile, Jatiya Party's central leader advocate Hasan Siraj Suja submitted nomination paper for the said post. District Election Office (DEO) sources said as many as 81 councillor candidates and 21 women for the reserved seats submitted their nominations on the day.

Kishoreganj: BNP names six mayor candidates

BNP Kishoreganj district unit on Monday announced the names of mayor candidates in the upcoming elections to six out of seven municipalities of the district. The BNP mayor aspirants are Majharul Islam (Kishoreganj), Dulal Sikdar (Karimganj), Alhaj Tofazzal Hossain Khan Dilip (Katiadi), Nurul Millat (Kuliarchar), Ahsan Kufia (Bajitpur), and Sohrab (Hossainpur). Advocate Fazlur Rahman, convenor of Kishoreganj district BNP, announced the names of the mayor candidates at Kishoreganj Press Club at around 7:00pm. Former education minister Dr M Osman Faruq was present.
