4 mayor aspirants allege attacks by AL men
Four mayor candidates in Jenidah, Pabna and Patuakhali districts have alleged that the ruling party candidates attacked them and their supporters, damaged posters and created obstacles to electioneering in their respective municipalities on Thursday and Friday.
Kazi Ashraful Azam, rebel AL mayor candidate in Shailkupa municipality under Jhenidah district, filed a general diary (GD) with Shailkupa Police Station on Friday night alleging that his rival candidate from the party Toyabur Rahman and his men beat up his supporter Ripon while he was urging voters over loudspeakers to cast votes for him (Azam) at Kazipara in the municipality at around 7:30pm.
He further alleged that AL mayor candidate Toyabur and his campaigners also snatched the loudspeaker and some posters and leaflets from Ripon, reports our correspondent.
In Pabna, Supporters of BNP mayor candidate in the upcoming election to Ishwardi municipality were assaulted allegedly by the ruling party candidate's men on Thursday evening, according to our correspondent.
BNP mayor aspirant Mokhlesur Rahman Bablu and his supporters filed a GD with Ishwardi Police Station on Friday and also held a press conference.
At the press conference, Bablu and his men alleged that the supporters of AL mayor candidate Abul Kalam Azad Mintu assaulted their campaigners, including Bablu's brother Mahafuzur Rahman Rana, and damaged election posters on Thursday night.
Our Patuakhali correspondent reported that two candidates for the mayoral post of Kalapara municipality yesterday alleged that the ruling party men attacked the houses of their supporters, damaged their posters at different places of the municipality on Thursday and Friday.
They made the allegations at a press conference at Patuakhali Press Club at around 5:00pm and demanded deployment of army in the municipality to ensure a free, fair and transparent election. Later, the mayor aspirants submitted a memorandum to deputy commissioner (DC).
BNP-backed mayoral candidate Humayun Kabir told the conference that the ruling party activists damaged his posters at different points in the municipality on Thursday and Friday nights. They also ransacked the house of his supporter Bilkis Jahan Buri, he added.
On Thursday night, the AL men also threw brickbats on the house of upazila BNP President ABM Mosharraf Hossain, he further alled.
