Kurigram: 23 aspirants to fight for three mayor posts
As many 23 mayor aspirants, 172 councillor candidates and 53 women for the reserved seats are contesting with their poll symbols in the upcoming elections to three municipalities of the district.
More than one mayor aspirant is contesting under the banner of same political party. The election offices concerned gave them poll symbols on December 27, according to our correspondent.
In Kurigram municipality, six mayor aspirants are Awami League (AL) candidate Md Kaziul Islam, rebel candidate of AL Md Abdul Jalil, BNP candidate Md Abu Bakar Siddique, rebel candidate of BNP Md Nur Islam Nuru, Jatiaya Party (JP) candidate Md Majidul Alam and independent candidate Shakhawat Hossain Bipul.
Three mayor aspirants advocate Yasin Ali, Moksedul Gazi and Tauhidul Islam withdrew their nominations from Kurigram Election Office on December 26.
In Ulipur municipality, eight mayor aspirants are AL candidate Abdul Hamid Sarkar, three rebel candidates of AL Md Abu Sayed Sarkar, Md Sazzadur Rahman and Md Abdullahel Baki, and BNP candidate Md Haidar Ali Mia, two rebel candidates of BNP Md Aminul Islam and Md Mozammel Haque Baki, and JP candidate Md Golam Mostafa.
Four mayor aspirants Mahfuzar Rahman, Mahiul Islam, Abdul Kuddus and shafiqul Islam Dara withdrew their nominations from Ulipur Election Office on December 26.
In Nageswari municipality, nine mayor aspirants are AL candidate Md Abdus Shabur Chanchal, BNP candidate Abul Kasem Sarkar, four rebel candidates of BNP Md Golam Rasul Raja, Mohammad Hossain Faqu, Md Fazlul Haque and Md Hasem Ali Sarkar, two JP candidates Md Abdur Rahman Mia and Md Hossen Ali Bepari and Islami Shasantantra Andolan candidate Md Abdur Rab.
Moulvibazar: Infighting in AL over selecting mayor candidate
Internal feud in Awami League Moulvibazar Municipal unit has deepened over selection of mayor candidate.
AL municipal unit General Secretary Emdadul Haque Mintu in a press release on Monday said lawmaker Syed Mohsin Ali has announced the name of Saifur Rahman Babul as mayor candidate, ignoring the opinion of ward level leaders.
He said the municipal unit on December 21 held a meeting where 12 out of 18 presidents and general secretaries of nine wards units had given their support to Nahid Ahmed as AL mayor candidate for the municipality.
Ataur Rahman Lokman, president of the municipal unit, issued another press release on Tuesday, saying that no meeting of the unit was held on December 21. He said Saifur Rahman Babul is AL mayor candidate.
Mintyu said lawmaker Syed Mohsin Ali has intervened in selection of mayor candidate, defying the instruction of the AL central committee.
Though AL President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has instructed the ministers and MPs not to interfere in the selection of mayor candidates, Mohsin Ali on Saturday announced the name of Saifur Rahman Babul, who got the support of only four leaders of the ward committees at the meeting on Decemver 21, Mintu said.
Faridpur: Legal bar to holding Bhanga election goes
The legal bar to holding election to Bhanga municipality has gone as Supreme Court on Monday halted for six weeks the operation of the High Court stay order on the election process.
Passing the interim order upon a petition filed by the Election Commission, the vacation chamber judge also asked the petitioner to file regular application for leave to appeal with the Appellate Division against the December 12 order of the High Court.
The High Court had stayed the election process and issued a rule upon the Election Commission following a writ petition over delimitation and inclusion of names on the voter list.
Emerging from the court, Additional Attorney General MK Rahman, counsel for the Election Commission, told reporters there is no legal bar in holding election to the municipally following the interim order of the apex court.
