Move for medicine shops in hospital angers traders
Medicine traders in the district yesterday threatened to go on an indefinite strike from Sunday protesting a Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital (DJMCH) decision to up six medicine stores inside its compound.
Giving a three-day ultimatum to the hospital authorities to withdraw the decision, the traders said such step would affect their business in the district.
The traders, under the banner of Dinajpur Oushad Dokandar Malik Samity, yesterday formed a human chain in front of Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital to press their demand.
At the human chain, the traders alleged that hospital authorities took the decision to favour some individuals.
“If the decision is not cancelled within three days, an indefinite strike will begin from Sunday” said Kamrul Islam, president of the shop owners' body.
Almost all medicine traders of the district participated in the programme.
Earlier, on December 26, the traders held a press conference at Dinajpur Press Club protesting the DJMCH move.
At the press conference they alleged that the government hospitals in the country rarely run any medical store inside the hospital complex. But recently the hospital authorities here allowed six shops inside the compound to favour some individuals of their choice, they said.
Contacted, Dr Shamsul Alam, Director of Dinajpur Medical College and Hospital yesterday said that the managing committee of the hospital recently decided to set up the shops inside hospital compound. The categories of the shops include medicine shops, a phone-fax shop and a restaurant, he added.
