AL candidate's men assault rebel aspirant in Magura

Acting mayor of Magura municipality Tapan Kumar Roy, also an AL rebel candidate for the post of mayor in the upcoming election to the municipality, was assaulted by the supporters of AL mayor aspirant Altaf Hossain at Defulia Bazar yesterday. Tapan and his supporters came under attack while they were engaged in electioneering in the area at around 5:30pm. At least eight people, including Tapan, also the organizing secretary of AL Magura district unit, were injured. Of the injured, district BCL leader Mizanur Rahman was admitted to Magura Sadar Hospital while the rest seven were given first aid at the hospital. The attackers also damaged five motorbikes of the supporters of Tapan. On information, police from Magura Sadar Police Station went to the spot and brought the situation under control. They also seized the damaged motorbikes. No case was filed in connection with the incident as of filing of this report at 7:00pm. Meanwhile, two mayor aspirants belonging to two factions of Magura BNP are contesting the upcoming election scheduled for January 27. They are Mahbubul Haque Siddiquee and Farukuzzaman Faruk. Both filed their nominations yesterday. Farukuzzaman is the joint-secretary of BNP's rebel group led by advocate Mokaddes Hossain and Mahbubul Haque is the supporter BNP district unit President Kabir Murad. In a meeting on December 9 at the BNP office at Shahid Mintu Road in the town, the centrally approved committee announced the name of Mahbubul Haque Siddiquee as party candidate for the mayoral post while Makaddes faction announced the name of Farukuzzaman Faruk as its mayoral candidate from a meeting at Magura Press Club on Monday. The meeting of the Mokaddes faction was addressed, among others by Iqbal Akhter Khan, Mohammad Nazimuddin, Akhter Hossain, Aminul Islam Chandu Mian and Golam Sarwar Molla and Mayoral candidate Farukuzzaman. The meeting of the Kabir Murad faction was addressed by Magura Sadar BNP President Sayed Mokaddes Ali, general secretary of the same unit Mihir Kanti Biswas, president of the municipality unit and former mayor of Magura municipality Abdul Gafur, local BNP leaders Aminul Islam, Mizanur Rahman, Rezaul Islam Raja, and Jubo Dal leaders Abu Sayeed al Mamun, Amirul Islam and Washikur Rahman.
