Early execution of verdict demanded

Over 300 teachers, students and employees of economics department of Rajshahi University (RU) yesterday brought out a silent procession on the campus demanding speedy execution of verdict of Prof Yunus murder case. They held a condolence meeting at the economics department to mark the sixth anniversary of death of Prof Muhammad Yunus, a teacher of the department who was knifed to death during morning walk near the campus on December 24, 2004. Speakers called upon the government to take immediate steps for execution of verdict of the case. They alleged that although a Rajshahi court, in a verdict delivered on January 28 this year, sentenced two JMB leaders Shahidullah and Shafiullah to death by hanging, but the verdict is yet to be executed. Demanding immediate execution of the verdict, Prof Mohammed Mohsin Ali, chairman of the department said Prof Yunus was killed because he was always vocal against the activities of anti-liberation forces and fundamentalists. Departmental teachers, students and employees also placed wreath at the grave of Prof Yunus at the university graveyard and arranged a special prayer for the departed soul.
