Khulna: Nine mayor aspirants from two municipalities
Nine candidates have finally remained in the race to capture mayoral posts of Chalna Paikgacha municipalities of the district. Of them, five are contesting for the mayoral post of Chalna municipality. They are Sheikh Abdul Hamid, Abul Khair Khan, Sanat Kumar Biswas, Kumaresh Biswas and Achinta Kumar Mondol, reports our staff correspondent.
Sheikh Abdul Hamid, president of Dakope upazila unit of Jatiya Party, has got nomination to contest for the mayoral post of Chalna municipality on behalf of AL-led 14-party alliance.
But Assistant Publicity Secretary Sanat Kumar Biswas and ward level leader Kumaresh Biswas of Dakope upazila Awami League have not withdrawn from the race as earlier asked by party's central committee.
The two other candidates contesting for Chalna municipal mayoral post are Abul Khair Khan, president of Dakope upazila BNP, and Principal Achinta Kumar Mondol.
According to affidavit, BNP candidate Abul Khair Khan read up to class seven while 14-party alliance candidate Sheikh Abdul Hamid read up to class nine. On the other hand, Sanat Kumar Biswas, who claimed himself in the affidavit as owner of rice and flour mills, did not continue his education after passing HSC examination while Kumaresh Biswas passed only SSC examination.
Independent candidate Prof Achinta Kumar Mondol, principal of Chalna Degree College, was an accused in two criminal cases but later exempted from charges as police submitted final report.
Two other AL leaders contesting for the mayoral post defying party decision are Kumaresh Biswas and Sanat Kumar Biswas. Kumaresh Biswas is an accused in a case now under trial in the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court, Khulna, and Sanat Kumar Biswas was acquitted of a criminal case by a court here last year.
In Paikgacha municipality, Four candidates are contesting for the mayoral post of the municipality. They are Awami League leader Sheikh Kamrul Hasan Tipu, President of Paikgacha poura BNP advocate M Maftun Ahmed,
local leader of Islami Shasantrantra Andolan Bangladesh Gazi Abdus Salam and AL leader and shrimp trader Selim Jahangir
Satkhira: 14-party fails to field single candidates for mayor posts
As the Awami League (AL) led grand alliance has failed to field single candidate, two candidates one each from the AL and Jatiya Party (JP-Ershad) are now vying for the post of mayor in the upcoming election to Satkhira municipality.
Rift in the rank and file in the AL and JP has surfaced over the municipality election. Six candidates are contesting for the post of mayor of the municipality.
The candidates are incumbent Satkhira municipality mayor and district AL Vice-President Sheikh Ashraful Haque, JP district unit President Sheikh Azharul Islam, district BNP leader MA Jalil, rebel candidate of JP Syed Ikhtiar Ali and independent candidates Sheikh Akbar Hossain and Solaiman Hossain.
A total of 43 candidates are contesting for councillor posts while 15 women for the reserved seats.
In Kalaroa municipality, both the ruling AL and opposition BNP have failed to field single candidate to contest the upcoming election to the municipality.
Five local AL leaders out of eight candidates are contesting for the post of mayor in Kalaroa municipality while two local BNP leaders are now contesting for the post in the upcoming election.
The candidates are Kalaroa upazila AL convener Moznu Chowdhury, district AL working committee member and upazila AL joint convener Arafat Hossain, local AL leaders Kazi Abdul Wahab, Rafiqul Islam and Sheikh Amjad Hossain, Kalaroa pourasava BNP general secretary Sheikh Sharifuzzaman Tuhin and Kalaroa upazila Chhatra Dal president Gazi Mohamamd Akhtarul Islam and local Jamaat leader Kazi Maniruzzaman Moznu.
Forty-nine candidates are vying for councillor posts and 12 women for the reserved seats.
