Rangpur: Eleven to vie for two mayor posts
In Badarganj municipality, two mayor candidates--Anwarul Haque Pramanik, of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD), and Hena Mohammad Ferdous of Jatiya Party--withdrew their nominations on Sunday, reports our correspondent.
Five candidates are now vying for the mayoral post of the municipality. They are former mayor of the municipality Uttam Kumar Saha, Sarwar Jahan Manik, Mosharraf Hossain Azizul Haque, and Selim Kamol Lohani. Uttam Kumar Saha has been nominated by the grand alliance while Selim Kamol Lohani by BNP.
Thirty-eight candidates are contesting for councilor posts while 17 women for the reserved seats.
Haragachh municipality, six candidates are contesting the upcoming election to the municipality for the post of mayor. They are Ershadul Haque, Samiul Islam Shimu, Jamil Akhter, Sadakat Hossain Jhantu and Saiful Islam Manik. Ershadul Haque and Samiul Islam Shimu are local Awami League leaders. BNP candidate Nazrul Islam withdrew his candidature on Sunday.
A total of 43 candidates for councillor posts and 13 candidates for women reserved seats are now in the poll race.
