Chevron scholarships
Chevron Bangladesh, a subsidiary of energy company Chevron Corporation, recently awarded scholarships at three separate events in Sylhet, Moulvibazar and Habiganj as a part of its yearly scholarship distribution programme among the financially disadvantaged but meritorious students, said a press release.
On December 15, scholarships were given to 181 students at a function at Nadampur High School at Inathgonj, Nabiganj upazila, Habiganj.
Besides, 271 eligible students from 11 educational institutions near Chevron's Bibiyana gas field have already received their stipends or get them shortly.
In Sylhet, the scholarship was distributed on December 19 at BRAC Training & Resource Centre at Pirer Bazar.
This year, four high schools were included, from which 139 students received scholarships.
In Moulvibazar, the scholarship was given to 318 students belonging to seven educational institutions and two tribal communities of Srimongal and Kamalgonj upazilas.
Stipends of Tk 4,000 were awarded to all candidates, while stipends of Tk 6,000 were awarded to candidates who had obtained A+ grades in their Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations.
Chevron Bangladesh has been running the scholarship programme for the last several years near its three gas fields.
In 2009, the number of scholarship recipients stood at 590, each being selected on the basis of their financial need and academic performance. This year, the figure will increase to 909, the press release said.
