Police, shop owner sue 34 BCL men

Thirty-four Chhatra League (BCL) activists were sued on Sunday night on charge of assaulting police and vandalising a shop during a factional clash at Rajshahi University (RU). Police said sub-inspector (SI) Mashiur Rahman filed a case accusing 14 BCL men with name with Motihar police station of assaulting SI Arifuzzaman during the factional clash on the day. Abdus Salam, owner of Baishakhi shop filed another case with the same police station against 20 BCL men on charge of vandalising his shop at Kazla Bazar during the clash. Of them, five accused were identified while the rest 15 remained unnamed, police said. Earlier on Sunday, six BCL activists were injured during a factional clash at noon on the campus. The clash ensued when a group of BCL activists led by Takim Ahmed, Tamim Ahmed and Ashikur Rahman beat up Sabuj Sarwar, a BCL activist of the rival faction at the university's Tukitaki Chattar. At one stage of the clash, the BCL men assaulted Arifuzzaman, a sub-inspector of Motihar police station as he (Arifuzzaman) 'tried to resolve' the matter. The clashing BCL men also vandalised the Baishakhi shop at the university near Kazla Bazar, according to police. Following the clash, Motihar police arrested BCL activists Takim Ahmed of philosophy department, Ashikur Rahman Ashis of applied physics department and Abu Saleh Babu and Jewel Rana of language and culture department in the evening. Officer-in-charge of Motihar police station Abul Khair said all the four were shown arrested under the two ceases. "We will produce the arrestees before Rajshahi court for trial after primary interrogation,” he added.
