Date for filing further probe report by CID deferred again
Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge of Sylhet yesterday deferred the date for filing the report of the 'further investigation' in Kibria kiling case to 2 January 2011.
The court set the new date again as the Special Public Prosecutor Kishore Kumar Kar prayed for fresh time extension stating that the CID needed more time for filing the report.
Sources said it was the 48th date given by the court as the CID could not submit the 'further investigation report' during the last 44 months.
The then investigation officer of the case Senior ASP of CID Munshi Atiqur Rahman through a petition on 7 March 2007 informed the Sylhet Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal about necessity of the 'further investigation'.
ASP Md Rafiqul Islam was given the task as Munshi went on retirement after a few months.
Asked, ASP Rafiqul Islam, investigation officer of the case said that their 'further investigation' was still going on. He, however could not ascertain when the job would be completed.
Former finance minister SAMS Kibria, his nephew advocate Shah Manzurul Huda, local AL leaders -- Abdur Rahim, Abul Hossain and Siddique Ali were killed in grenade attack on a public meeting at Boidderbazar of Habiganj Sadar upazila on 27 January of 2005.
CID's much-talked officer Senior ASP Munshi Atique filed chargesheet in the case on 20 March that year against 10 accused.
Of the accused, eight have been rounded up while two are still absconding. The eight, including Habiganj district BNP vice-president Abdul Quaiyum spent three years in jail, before coming out on bail on 15 July of 2008 while the others were freed 24 July. The group at a press conference claimed that they were falsely implicated in the case.
Later, the CID started further investigation.
The Rab on 8 March 2010 arrested alleged Huji operative Mizanur Rahman Mithu, who gave confessional statement before judicial magistrate in Habiganj the following day. The CID then remanded the former state minister for home affairs Luthfuzzaman Babar in connection with the same case.
At a stage, Huji chief Mufti Abdul Hannan and operatives including his brother Muhibullah alias Muhibur Rahman alias Ovi, Sharif Shahedul Alam Bipul, Syed Naim Ahmed alias Arif and Mufti Mainuddin alias Abu Zandal were shown arrested in the case. The others are still at large.
