Moulvibazar: Fresh feud in AL over mayoral candidate
Feud over nomination of AL candidate for the mayoral post of Moulvibazar municipality surfaced anew after local lawmaker Syed Mohsin, also former president of the district AL, yesterday declared Saifur Rahman Babul as AL candidate, reports our correspondent.
Emdadul Haque Mintu, general secretary of Moulvibazar municipal unit of AL, in a press release on Thursday said district Jubo League General Secretary Nahid Ahmed has been selected as AL candidate for the mayoral post of Moulvibazar municipality.
District AL leader Abdul Matin, another candidate for the mayoral post, has already withdrawn his nomination in support of Saifur Rahman Babul.
Lawmaker Syed Mohsin Ali announced the name of Babul at a press conference at his residence yesterday noon. He said AL leader Abdul Matin has also withdrawn his candidature in favour of Babul.
When asked about another candidate Nahid Ahmed, Lawmaker Mohsin said Nahid belongs to Jubo League, not Awami League. He said the central committee has asked him to select party candidate for the mayoral post in consultation with the leaders of municipal and Sadar upazila units."I did this, taking opinion of the leaders of the two units," the lawmaker said.
Contacted, Emdadul Haque Mintu said Nahid Ahmed has been selected as AL mayor candidate for Moulvibazar municipality. He said the selection was made through consensus of the leaders and members of municipal and Sadar upazila units.
Moulvibazar district AL has been divided into two groups. One group is reportedly backed by district AL president and chief whip of the parliament Vice Principal MA Shahid while another by lawmaker Syed Mohsin Ali.
Magura: BNP factions file separate mayor candidates
Internal conflict in district BNP took a new turn as the rebel group led by advocate Mokaddes Hossain and Iqbal Akter Khan nominated separate candidate for mayoral post in the upcoming municipality election, reports our correspondent.
They formally announced the name of Farukuzzaman Faruk as their mayoral candidate at a meeting at Magura Press Club conference room last week.
Earlier, at a meeting on December 9 at the BNP office at Shahid Mintu Road in the town, the centrally approved committee led by its president Kabir Murad announced the name of Mahbubul Haque Siddiquee as the candidate for the same post.
Party insiders said Magura district unit BNP has been dogged by internal feud from July last year over formation of committees. The feud now has spread to upazila and union levels, they said.
From last year the party has been divided into two factions-- one led by Kabir Murad and Ali Ahmed Biswas and the other by-- advocate Mokaddes Hossain and Iqbal Akhter Khan.
The two rival factions held separate councils of the district unit BNP on November 18 last year and formed two different committees. But Kabir Murad's committee was approved by the central committee where former general secretary Ali Ahmed Biswas was made general secretary, party sources said.
