BCL blocks road as leader held on criminal charge

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists yesterday blocked Nabinagar-Companiganj road for five hours from 10:00am protesting arrest of a leader of the student body in Nabinagar upazila on Friday night. Nabinagar police arrested Md Shafiqul Islam, 28, president of BCL Jinodpur union unit, under Nabinagar upazila at around 11:00pm on Friday in connection with a criminal case filed against him. Protesting the arrest of Shafiq, hundreds of BCL men gathered at Bhangura Bazar and put up barricades on Nabinagar-Companiganj road, disrupting traffic for five hours from 10:00am to 3:00pm. The BCL men also brought out a procession at Nabinagar upazila headquarters demanding removal of officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nabinagar Police Station Rupak Kumar Saha and immediate release of Shafiq. Md Khairul Amin, former president of BCL Nabinagar upazila unit, said police arrested Jinodpur BCL leader Shafiq in a false case. He demanded immediate release of Shafiq Contacted, OC Rupak Kumar Saha said they arrested BCL leader Shafiqul Islam in connection with a criminal case. Meanwhile, angry people yesterday blocked Tangail-Jamalpur road at Madhupur for an hour demanding arrest of the killers of Khorshed Alam, 30, son of Idris Ali of Lokdou village, in the upazila, reports our Tangail correspondent. Khorshed went missing on December 21 and his body was found in a water body at Shalikha on December 22. Being informed, police recovered the body and a case was filed with Madhupur Police Station in connection with the murder. As police could not arrest any of the killers as of Friday, angry villagers blocked Tangail-Jamalpur road at around 12:00noon, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on both sides of the busy road. The villagers withdrew the road blockade programme after police assured them of arresting the killers of Khorshed immediately.
