Pirates loot 500 shanties, injure 70 fishermen

A gang of pirates swooped on some 500 makeshift shanties of fishermen of three char areas here and looted valuables worth Tk 20 lakh injuring 70 fishermen early yesterday. A dry fish trader told the news agency yesterday morning that the gang numbering 50/60 divided into several groups stormed into Dublar Char, Alorkol and Meher Ali Char of Sharankhola and Mongla upazilas at dead of night. Later, the gang led by infamous pirates Zulfiquar and Gama ransacked the shanties and beat the fishermen mercilessly leaving 70 of them injured. They also looted valuables, including cash, nets and fishes worth about Tk 20 lakh, he added. He said the pirates also demanded Tk 25,000 from each of the families of the three char areas as toll failing which they threatened to abduct the family members. Police Superintendent of the district Khondokar Rafiqul Islam said he directed the police stations and camps concerned to look into the incidents. In another incident, a betel nut trader was stabbed to death after abduction by unknown criminals at Chingrikhali Bazar of Morelgonj upazila on Wednesday night. The deceased was identified as Alamgir Sheikh, 35, of Gopalpur village of same upazila. Police said, a gang abducted Alamgir on his way home from Chingrikhali Bazar at 11:00pm. They took him to roadside spot and stabbed him indiscriminately, leaving him seriously injured. Hearing his scream, locals rescued and rushed him to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital where he succumbed in the morning.
