Principal held for having 'fake' certificates

Police arrested the principal of a college on Wednesday evening on charge of joining service with 'fake' academic certificates. Arrestee Abdul Khaleq was principal of Alauddin Ahmed Degree College at Kumarkhali in the district. Police said they arrested Khaleq as he violated court order to surrender before it. According to court sources, Khaleq joined Alauddin Ahmed Degree College as principal on June 18, 2000. Earlier, he worked at Kalihati College in Tangail. Following allegation from different quarters that Khaleq's Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) was fake, the then college governing body submitted a petition to deputy commissioner (DC) of Kushtia seeking investigation into the matter on January 23, 2002. Saidur Rahman, a magistrate of Kushtia carried out an investigation and found that Khaleq's HSC certificate was fake. Kushtia DC sent a report in this regard to the National University (NU) authorities for necessary action against the principal on 24 May, 2003. The NU authorities than forwarded the report to the education ministry. Sensing danger, Khaleq filed a writ petition with the High Court against the college governing body terming its activities a conspiracy. Later, a division bench stayed the activities of the college governing body. After a long interval, a teacher of the college, Bayazid Hossain, filed a fresh case with Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Kushtia seeking action against Khaleq on September 29, 2010. Examining all documents, senior judicial magistrate Touhidul Islam issued an arrest warrant against Khaleq on November 14. But immediately after the warrant, Khaleq went into hiding. On Wednesday, on a tip off, a team of Kushtia Sadar police raided Khaleq's house at about 5.30pm and arrested him. The chief judicial magistrate sent Khaleq to jail yesterday.
