People in Tala upazila yesterday formed a human chain and held a rally urging the government to take immediate steps for dredging silted River Kabodak to solve the perennial waterlogging problem to mitigate sufferings of 50 lakh affected people in Satkhira, Khulna and Jessore districts. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at a rally at Shyamnagar upazila headquarters on July 24 this year assured the people that her government would take step to solve the waterlogging problems in Kabodak basin by re-excavating the silted up river. Kendriyo Pani Committee (Central Water Committee), a committee floated by local people to launch mass movement to press for the demand to dredge the silted river, organised yesterday's programme. A large number of people including women and children joined a human chain that started at about 11:00am and continued till 12 noon on both sides of Kabodak River in Tala upazila. Earlier they held a rally in front of Tala upazila Parishad with Principal Abdur Rahman in the chair. Tala upazila Chairman Ghosh Sanat Kumar, vice-chairman Mushtari Sultana, Kendriyo Pani Committee president Principal Safiqul Islam, freedom fighter Morol Abdus Salam and Principal Enamul Haque addressed the rally, among others. Waterlogging due to massive deposition of Kobadak River is causing damage to crops and dwellings, much to the suffering of people in vast areas of three districts, the speakers said. Encroachers have built houses, shops, clubs, factories and fish farms on thousands of acres of newly emerged lands on the banks of the river while so-called fish farmers often set up bamboo barriers there, hastening death of the river, they said. They have urged the government to take immediate steps to dredge the river and free it from the illegal encroachers.
