Charges framed against 23 BDR personnel

The special court-15 yesterday framed mutiny charges against 23 BDR personnel of 18 Rifles Battalion under Rangamati sector. All of the 23 accused were produced in the special court headed by Col Zahedur Rahman, Chittangong sector commander, at 10:00am. The two other members of the court are Lt Col Md Abdun Nur and Maj Golam Mostafa al Mamun. Prosecutor Lt Col Mehedi Hasan read out the allegations against the accused. He appealed to the court to frame charges against all the 23 as they took part in mutiny at the battalion headquarters on February 26, 2009. The accused revolted against their officers, expressing solidarity with the mutineers of BDR headquarters at Pilkhana in the capital and looted firearms and ammunition from armoury, the prosecutor said. All the 23 accused claimed innocence. The special court then framed charges against the accused and adjourned the trial proceedings until 10:00am today. Attorney general's representative Kazi Md Ijarul Haque Akand, senior public prosecutors advocate Belayet Hossain and advocate Aminur Rahman Khan were present in the court. BDR personnel at three of the sector's five battalions revolted on February 26 last year, expressing solidarity with the rebels of BDR headquarters at Pilkhana in the capital and looted arms and ammunition from armouries. The battalions are 12 Rifles Battalion at Rajanagar in Longudu, 9 Rifles Battalion at Marishya in Baghaichhari and 18 Rifles Battalion at Chhotohorina in Barkal upazila.
