2 jailed for arranging child marriage, one for stalking

Two people were jailed for arranging child marriage while another was for stalking a schoolgirl in Sylhet and Jhenidah districts on Wednesday. Our Staff correspondent from Sylhet reported that the marriage of Sohel Ahmed, 24, of Keutihaor village under Kanaighat upazila was set to be solemnised with Rahena Begum, 13, daughter of Haris Uddin of the neighbouring village on November 24. On information, upazila Nirbahi Officer Matiul Islam Chowdhury and women affairs officer Afsar Ali Mondol went to the villages and forced the families of the two to stop the illegal marriage. On the following day, the families of Sohel, also an expatriate in Dubai, and Rehena, a class six student, went to Sylhet city and made an affidavit showing the girl's age over 18 and registered their marriage. Hearing the news, UNO Matiul Islam Chowdhury, also nirbahi (executive) magistrate, summoned the groom and the bride's father to appear in his court on December 15. Accordingly, the two, Sohel and Haris, appeared in the court that awarded them 15 days' imprisonment and fined them Tk 500, in default they are suffer three more days in jail. In Jhenidah, a mobile court on Wednesday night sentenced a youth to 10 months' imprisonment for stalking a girl in he town, reports our correspondent. The convict is Rubel, son of Atiar Rahman of Hamdah Sheikh Para in the district town. Nirbahi Magistrate Sajebur Rahman pronounced the verdict at 10:30pm. Officer-in-Charge (OC) Iqbal Bahar of Sadar Police Station said Rubel went to the house of Rokhsana, a final year student of Jhenidah Polytechnic Institute, in the same area on Wednesday night and proposed her to marry him. As Rokhsana, daughter of Liakat Ali, refused to accept the proposal, Rubel tried to drag her out the house. He also assaulted Rokhsana's two neighbours who came to help her. On information, police rushed to the spot, arrested Rubel and produced him before the mobile court headed by the nirbahi magistrate. After hearing, the court sentenced Rubel to jail.
