Constable held on extortion charge
A police constable was arrested in Meherpur on charge of extortion on Saturday evening.
The constable, identified as Bulbul Hossain, allegedly demanded Tk 5 lakh from Rupali Khatun, wife of Dubai expatriate Anwar Hossain.
Bulbul also threatened the woman to implicate in false case if she did not meet his demand.
Rupali contacted a high police official in the district and sought his help. She also filed a general diary (GD) with Meherpur Sadar police as per the advice of the police official, several days ago.
On Saturday morning, when Bulbul asked Rupali to pay the money, Rupali told him to come to her house in the evening.
As Bulbul came to collect the money at about 7:00 pm, she informed Sadar police.
A Sadar police team led by sub-inspector Hasan Imam rushed to Rupali's house and arrested Bulbul from the spot.
Police said they have already suspended the constable and departmental action will be taken after investigation.
Meanwhile, muggers stabbed a businessman in Chuadanga on Saturday in broad daylight and took away Tk 1.2 lakh from him.
Police said, cosmetic trader Ali Hossain of the town was attacked at Purbasha transport counter at about 7:30 am. He was supposed to leave for Dhaka on business purpose.
The gang stabbed him indiscriminately as he tried to resist them and fled with the bag containing the money.
